Florida Aquarium to open multi-sensory 4D theater on Sunday

Starting Sunday, visitors at the Florida Aquarium will have a new 4-D theater experience in the aquarium's outdoor plaza that will combine 3-D digital film with a variety of multisensory effects.

Located by the outdoor Splash Pad, the aquarium will be running films from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily starting Sunday in which viewers may get sprayed with water or feel the wind blowing in their hair.

"The 4-D Experience combines the visual drama of a 3-D digital film with a variety of multisensory effects built into the seats and the theater environment and brings on-screen images to life with such added effects such as bubbles, snow, scent, FX lighting, water mist, seat vibrations and wind," an aquarium news release said.

The new 4-D Theater holds up to 50 guests per show, with multiple shows per day. Films run approximately 15 minutes.

The first two films in the mix are Happy Feet 4-D Experience, in which the penguin Mumble sets out on an adventure to appeal to humans to stop stealing the colony's fish, and also Coastal Predators. The documentary is about the yearly South African sardine run, in which thousands of dolphins sharks and seals feast on billions of sardines between the months of May and July.

The experience is included with admission, which is $26.95, seniors $24.95, ages 3-11 $21.95, free for 2 and younger. Prices are generally $2 cheaper online at flaquarium.org. 701 Channelside Drive, Tampa.

  5. Fresh figs take a starring role in this fig cake

    Cooking

    Figs are showy fruit.

They can't help themselves. Even the plainest, drabbest fig will reveal a scarlet belly, flecked with shimmering seeds, once you take a bite. Whether they're sliced or halved, arranged in a tart shell, on a crostini or just on a plate, there are few visions more enticing. This is why most fig …

Chopping fresh figs and folding them into cake batter is not something you usually see, but that’s exactly what happens in this recipe for fig cake.
