5 things to do under $5: Kids golf free, home show, poolside Christmas in July

RECOMMENDED READING

1 Kids Golf Free: Thanks to the First Tee of Clearwater, kids ages 15 and younger can join a paying adult for one free round of golf this summer through Sept. 1. The Clearwater Junior Tees have provided shortened, manageable distances for children. Open 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily at the Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Club, 3030 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. (727) 726-4673.

2 Back to School Bash: The Westfield Brandon mall is getting a jump on things with kid-friendly fun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday — so maybe they won't notice there's only four more weeks of summer vacation left. The first 250 kids to complete a scavenger hunt get free backpacks. There will also be giveaways and area mascots, princesses and superheroes, as well as interactive sports, craft activities and a play area. The mall itself will have information kiosks on school resources, health and wellness services and after-school programs. Free. 459 Brandon Town Center, Brandon. (727) 674-1464.

3 Tampa Bay Home Show: Get out your honey-do list. The largest home show on Florida's west coast will be set up at Tropicana Field this weekend. You'll find home improvement experts and exhibits on fixing up the house, home entertainment and landscaping. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. 1 Tropicana Drive, St. Petersburg. Free admission. (727) 893-8523.

4 Tampa Indie Author and Book Convention: More than 40 international authors will be talking about the inspiration behind their work and signing books from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Chic Venue, 1339 E Fletcher Ave., Tampa. Free admission. For $30, upgrade to VIP for an after-party at 7 p.m. with authors, an open bar, appetizers and private signings. (651) 983-2050.

5 Christmas in July at the pool: Join Santa and cool down in Dunedin's Highlander Pool on Saturday. Dance to holiday music while enjoying holiday-themed games, bounce houses, races, an ugly T-shirt contest (since sweaters are out of the question), crafts, s'mores and an elf raffle. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 1937 Ed Eckert Drive, Dunedin. $3, ages 2 and younger free. (727) 298-3266.
