So why exactly did Seattle's Nelson Cruz have his picture taken with umpire Joe West - and by Cardinals C Yadier Molina, no less -before his first at-bat in the sixth inning of Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Well, because he wanted to.

And, because he could.

Cruz said he has always like the veteran umpire and thought it would be cool to get a picture with him, so he decided to bring his phone on the field.

"He's a legend," Cruz said. "I think that's the only chance you have to take a picture with Joe West."

Cruz planned to make it a selfie, but realized with his batting gloves on he couldn't work the phone so that's why he drafted Molina.

Cruz, who was pinch-hitting for the Rays Corey Dickerson, then did what anyone else would do, put his phone in his back pocket and got back to work.

The only difference being that meant stepping into the batter's box in front of a worldwide TV audience, as he ended up flying out to center.

"It was good," he said. "I had it on silent if anyone called me."

Plus, he said, "I have insurance.''

Cruz said he had a similar idea about a photo at first base during the 2013 All-Star Game, but popped out his first time up and forget the phone the second time, when he walked.

Given the more relaxed atmosphere with the All-Star Game no longer counting for homefield advantage in the World Series, Cruz decided he had another opportunity.

"I figured it wouldn't be an issue," Cruz said.

Teammate Robinson Cano, who hit the game-winning homer in the 10th and won MVP honors, was impressed.

"I really liked it," Cano said. "This game is supposed to be fun. A lot of us liked that. That was one of the best moments in the game. Now I want to take one, too."
