This week in the Billboard charts: Shakedown vs. Songbird
When I look at this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week of July 4, 1987, I only shake my head. Kenny G’s Songbird?
That’s how kooky the late ‘80s were. You can have Whitney Houston top the charts with I Wanna Dance With Somebody and then just a few spots down, there’s Kenny G with Songbird. And the meat between the cheese sandwich? Why, that’d be Shakedown, Bob Seder’s song that was far superior to the movie it appeared in. (Beverly Hills Cop II)
Maybe Dennis DeYoung was wrong: These weren’t the best … OF TIMES! (Sorry, you just have to yell the last two words.) Or perhaps it was Billy Joel who was right all along: He didn't start the fire. It was Kenny G.
